Grind

Burrs, settings, and the slow business of finding out what changed.

Cold beans grind differently, which I should have expected

I started freezing beans in single doses, mostly to stop a kilogram going stale while I worked through it slowly.

The first few mornings produced shots that ran much faster than they had the week before, at the same setting, from the same bag. Frozen beans fracture more cleanly and the grind comes out coarser than the dial says it should.

After adjusting two clicks finer for frozen doses the two routines produced roughly the same cup. I keep a note of which dial setting goes with which, because I will otherwise spend a morning rediscovering it.
